Fitted In Wittner

“We are always in need of a plain black flat.”

To mark our ongoing commitment to connecting our community to the circular fashion movement, we have partnered with Fitted for Work, an organisation that highlights the importance of fashion and uses it as a tool to help women gain financial independence and meaningful employment.

We collaborated with the Fitted for Work team to see how we could best contribute to their mission and after close consultation we donated 100 pairs of an essential black flat, which we believe would most universally meet the needs of a woman’s wardrobe.

We visited the FFW team at their Richmond HQ to learn more about their process and how our donation will support the community.

First of all, tell us about Fitted for Work.

Fitted for Work has been around for 18 years and we have supported 42,000 women around Australia. When most people think about us, they think about clothing – but thats only a small part of what we do. Our mission is that we want to ensure that every woman in Australia has financial independence and security through meaningful employment.

Who can benefit from your mission?

As women, we understand that it can often be difficult to ask for help, so we have no eligibility criteria because we know that disadvantage can strike at any time. What we find is, every woman is on a different part of her journey into work. We will often consult with women who don't need clothing, however, they may require support in other areas – like writing a résumé.

“Designed by women, for women and delivered by women – it's a safe space.”

Do you offer ongoing support?

We do encourage women to come back through the services as many times as she needs to – because we know that when you get a job, it's one thing to have an interview outfit, but it's another thing to then actually have a wardrobe for work and we don't want them to have to spend their first pay cheque, so we help them with that as well.

What is the Conscious Closet and how does it help Fitted for Work's mission?

The Conscious Closet was born from the idea that high quality, pre-loved clothes deserve to find a second home. So, we decided to change all that. We bring the very best of pre-loved clothing and accessories to you via our Melbourne Sales and online store which you can purchase from anywhere in Australia. 100% of the profit made from the Conscious Closet goes straight to Fitted for Work.

How are you helping to keep fashion circular?

Our corporate partners and the individuals who donate to the Conscious Closet understand the level of quality we are known to provide. We very rarely have to throw things out and if we do, it's done ethically through our textile recycling partners. If the garments don't meet our exacting standards, but still have some life to live – we will often send these garments to a selected crisis prevention centre.

Wittner CEO, Catherine Williamson says:

With a shared ethos, it was such an easy decision to partner with Fitted for Work. It has been a pleasure to be able to contribute in a conscious and considered way and to learn how this small gesture will impact the future development of women all around Australia.
